Rogers Mato’s arrival at Heart of Midlothian hasn’t quite gone to plan. After finally putting his transfer saga to bed and welcoming in a new manager at Tynecastle, the Uganda Cranes winger has the chance to take positives from a frustrating start and use them as motivation to kickstart his career in Europe.
The Ugandan international was dealt a difficult hand upon his arrival in Scotland last January. Signed after an eye-catching spell with North Macedonian outfit FK Vardar, his introduction to Hearts was disrupted by registration troubles, a difficult adaptation to life in Scotland and a lack of game time.
Still just 22 years old, Mato now finds himself working under new boss Wouter Vrancken at the Edinburgh club and is determined to make a good impression and boost his profile and fanfare throughout the internet, best betting sites in Uganda, and social media chatter forums from obsessed football fans. The player himself has stated his intentions to win over the Belgian coach, earn his place in the starting XI and showcase the qualities that saw Hearts fight to sign him.

Impressive Performances in North Macedonia Got Mato Noticed
Predating his time with Hearts, Rogers Mato had already turned heads with his performances for FK Vardar. In just 13 league appearances for Vardar during the 2025-26 season, Mato scored 12 goals. Thanks in part to Mato’s goal-scoring exploits, Hearts signed the winger on a three-year contract after his deal with Vardar expired.
Before his move to North Macedonia, Mato began his European career with Turkish club Sanliurfaspor. He later joined AP Brera before making the switch to Vardar. During his time with Vardar, Mato won the Macedonian Cup and helped his side reach the UEFA Conference League qualifiers. His domestic form in North Macedonia saw Mato catch the eye of scouts from leagues across Europe.
Expectations Were High When Mato Signed for Hearts
Although changing leagues is never easy, Rogers Mato has admitted that settling into Scottish football took time. The winger made only three appearances for Hearts since joining the club in January. Limited opportunities to shine have meant that Mato hasn’t yet been able to show Scotland what he can do.
“I’m just trying to pick up the language and Scottish football,” Mato told the Scottish Sun. “It does take time, but hopefully, I can hit the ground running next season.”
It’s not uncommon for players to experience transitions like Mato’s. The physicality and tempo of leagues abroad can differ greatly from league to league, and some players need time to adjust.
Mato has praised the former Hearts coaching staff for their patience with him as he got used to life in Scotland.
Fresh Start Under Hearts’ New Coach
Enter Wouter Vrancken. The Belgian replaced former Hearts manager Derek McInnes, who left to take up the managerial position at Glasgow rivals Rangers. Vrancken comes to Hearts with plenty of experience of coaching in his native Belgium. He will look to improve on Hearts’ second-place finish in last season’s Scottish Premiership.
For Rogers Mato, a new manager means a clean slate. Vrancken won’t have any history with the winger, for better or for worse. Speaking to the Scottish Sun earlier this summer, Mato said his chance to impress would come during pre-season. There will be no entitlement to game time based on previous performances — he knows he will have to prove himself to his new boss. It’s this hunger to prove himself that could become Mato’s biggest strength.
European Football Could Be the Next Big Stage
While nothing is guaranteed, Mato’s ultimate goal will likely go beyond just becoming a regular in the Hearts squad. He already has European experience from his time with Vardar, but Europa League football with Hearts could present Mato with a much larger stage to showcase his talents on.
Hearts entered the 20/27 season with European ambitions of their own.
Mato, who was described as being “excited” for the upcoming campaign by the club’s CEO, will be looking to play a part in that campaign. Perform well in Scotland and Europe for Hearts, and you never know – could Mato’s next stop be the Premier League?
Uganda Is Watching Closely
The attention on Mato isn’t restricted to Scotland. Mato is also a star for the Uganda national team, the Uganda Cranes. When he joined Hearts, he already had 41 caps for his country, as well as eight international goals to his name. One of those goals came at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Should Mato find form for Hearts, it would be music to the ears of the Uganda national team. Players like Mato, who can attack with pace and confidence, are what the Uganda Cranes will need if they want to be competitive with Africa’s elite. Matches against Europe’s finest in the Europa League could provide Mato with the platform he needs to go and kick on for Uganda. Ugandan supporters will certainly be keeping a close eye on him.
Forget About Past Transfers: Time to Shine in Scotland
Rogers Mato’s transfer to Hearts is over. His period of adjustment has come to an end. And Wouter Vrancken is now at the helm. It’s time for Mato to take the next step in his career. Appear in Europe for Hearts and excel, and who knows where Rogers Mato could end up? If last season with Vardar is anything to go by, he knows he can find the back of the net in Europe. Now he just has to prove it to the manager.
