Katumba revealed his retirement in a post on X, saying he officially completed his 47 years of military service on July 31, 2026. He described his career as a journey marked by dedication, commitment and love for Uganda.

“On 31 July 2026, I completed 47 years of military service to my country, a journey I undertook with dedication, commitment, and love for Uganda,” Katumba said.

He expressed gratitude to God, his fellow soldiers, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and Ugandans for giving him the opportunity to serve the country throughout his military career.

As I close this chapter, I do so with deep gratitude to God, my comrades, the UPDF and the people of Uganda for the privilege to serve. A lifetime in service. A country forever in my heart,” he added.

Reflecting on his long military career, Katumba also credited President Yoweri Museveni for influencing his decision to join the Army in 1979.

According to Katumba, Museveni, who was then serving as Minister of Defence in the UNLF government, encouraged and inspired many young Ugandans to join the Army and serve their country.

“As I reflect on 47 years of military service, I cannot tell the story of my journey without recognizing H.E. President @KagutaMuseveni,” he said.

Katumba said his decision to join the military in 1979 shaped much of his life, adding that serving under Museveni as Commander-in-Chief left a lasting impact on him.

“Serving under him as my Commander-in-Chief has left an indelible mark on my life. I remain deeply grateful for the trust, mentorship, and opportunity to serve,” he said.

He also acknowledged the various leaders and comrades who contributed to his journey, describing Museveni as one of the most significant figures in his military career.

As I close this chapter of my military career, I recognize the leaders and comrades who shaped the journey. H.E. President Museveni is undoubtedly one of the most significant,” Katumba said.
